Florida's active navigable-houseboat market today centers on the middle St. Johns River, the slow subtropical waterway that flows north through cypress swamps, oak hammocks, and spring-fed side runs between Sanford and Palatka. The river is one of the country's genuinely different houseboat experiences — slow current, close-in wildlife, manatee viewing at cool-season springs, and legendary bass fishing — and the primary rental fleet operates out of the DeLand/Hontoon area on the central river.
